Brooklynella is a marine fish parasite which belongs to the class of ciliates. Common symptoms observed in fish infected with brooklynella hostilis are:- Rubbing and flicking- Changes in color of the skin to bad condition- Thickening of the slime coat- Development of opaque to whitish patches that eventually detach- Cloudy eyes- Rapid, heavy breathing- Frayed fins clamped to the bodyIf you observe these symptoms, you should start treating your fish appropriately. We recommend eSHa OODINEX in reef tanks or eSHa TRIMARIN in fish-only tanks.Let's dive deeper into ciliates. Ciliates are a group of microorganisms with hair-like cilia on the outside. These cilia can move back and forward and can be used for locomotion. The entire single celled body of brooklynella is covered with a layer of cilia. Brooklynella is bean-shaped and somewhat resembles the freshwater parasite chilodonella. An outbreak of brooklynella leads to a change in color of the fish with the bright colors fading over time. Due to the irritation caused by the parasite the fish can start rubbing their body or head and eventually a thick layer of mucus develops. This thickening of the slime coat makes the body of the fish appear whitish with accumulations of mucus. The beginning stages are visible when looking at the fish head on and when focusing on the fish turning sides in the water. You can see the mucus build-up on the skin and also the frayed fins that are usually clamped to the body. Another clear symptom is the cornea of the eyes turning cloudy. Brooklynella not only affects the skin, but also the gills of fish, causing asphyxia and suffocation, with heavy rapid breathing as a clear symptom. Why are your fish suddenly covered in fluffy cotton wool like stuff and what has caused this to happen? Many aquarists have seen cotton wool-like formations suddenly appear on the body, mouth or fins of their fish ranging from a white to a more yellowish color, with varying degrees of severity and localization. These are fungi of the genera Saprolegnia, Achlya and others. However, mycosis is generally a secondary infection. Fish in the aquarium can get injuries in lots of different places and on all body parts with varying degrees of severity, here are some examples: 1. Lymphocystis is a viral disease among aquarium fish which starts off with small white bumps that can grow into cauliflower-like structures or form strings. These wart-like growths are hugely enlarged cells and this kind of excessive growth is called hypertrophy.There is no specific treatment against Lymphocystis. To improve resistance to disease and to stimulate the immune system, we recommend using eSHa OPTIMA's plant extracts for splendid water-quality and eSHa MINAROLL's vitamins and mineral complex every day in the aquarium. This will aid your fish in resisting negative environmental influences.Lymphocystis is caused by a large size, double stranded DNA virus which belongs to the genus Lymphocystivirus and is part of the Iridoviridae family. Examined under 400 fold magnification, the worms can easily be recognized by the position of the two central anchors of the attachment disc, which face each other to form a pincer, and the perpendicular third anchor which is located in between them. Due to their hardiness for various water conditions, accepting different kinds of food easily, their peaceful nature and strikingly beautiful coloration they have become very popular aquarium fish for the young and old alike. These strong fish are very forgiving when it comes to not ideal water conditions, making them an excellent beginner fish for children or new hobbyists.Like most other fish species, gourami have their own, species-specific gill flukes that that can negatively affect their health in case of severe infections. The flukes of the genus Trianchoratus belong to the family of Dactylogyridae, which encompasses most of the gill flukes and consists of dozens of genera and hundreds of species of parasites. So far only three species of gill flukes have been identified in Trichopodus: Trianchoratus trichogasterium, Trianchoratus leerium and Trianchoratus acleithrium. However, according to different studies and scientific data, the Pearl Gourami –Trichopodus leerlii has been found to only host one species of flukes, the gill fluke Trianchoratus leerium, named in honor of the host. Trianchoratus trichogasterium has only been found on the marble gourami Trichopodus trichopterus. Why are your fish suddenly covered in fluffy cotton wool like stuff and what has caused this to happen? Many aquarists have seen cotton wool-like formations suddenly appear on the body, mouth or fins of their fish ranging from a white to a more yellowish color, with varying degrees of severity and localization. These are fungi of the genera Saprolegnia, Achlya and others. However, mycosis is generally a secondary infection. Pathogenic fungi rarely develop on healthy skin, instead you will find them on dead or damaged tissue or areas of the body subject to necrosis.00:00 - Explanation00:48 - Causes02:05 - TreatmentMost often, necrosis develops in areas of skin injuries. Fish in the aquarium can get injuries in lots of different places and on all body parts with varying degrees of severity, here are some examples: 1. Mating behavior of males as well as aggression from one species towards another can cause damage. Both forms of aggressive behavior can damage scales and the skin, as well as leaving injuries on the jaws and the fins of the fish. 2. Capturing methods and transport can cause trauma.3. Some species of fish, such as catfish, occasionally hide behind heaters and, if the heater is installed without a protective cover, the fish can get seriously burned. In these burned areas, tissue will die and mold-like growths can develop.4. Bacterial and protozoal infections that lead to skin lesions can also result in mycosis.5. In places where parasites attach (such as Lernaea), inflammations and fungal growth are often observed.6. Unfertilized fish eggs die and are regularly covered in fungus which then in turn can also infect the eggs that are alive by proximity.7. Outdoor pond fish can be covered in fungus when the water temperature slowly increases from cold to warm.8. Marine fish fortunately rarely develop fungi.The sooner you notice injuries on the fish and take action, the better the chances are that your fish will fully recover and its health will not deteriorate into a more critical state. Lymphocystis is a viral disease among aquarium fish which starts off with small white bumps that can grow into cauliflower-like structures or form strings. These wart-like growths are hugely enlarged cells and this kind of excessive growth is called hypertrophy.There is no specific treatment against Lymphocystis. This will aid your fish in resisting negative environmental influences.Lymphocystis is caused by a large size, double stranded DNA virus which belongs to the genus Lymphocystivirus and is part of the Iridoviridae family. Lymphocystis infects both freshwater and marine fish species. The disease occurs frequently in labyrinth fish (gourami, colisa lalia), cichlids (apistogramma, angel fish), marine amphiprion, butterflyfish and other fish species. The virus affects the connective tissue cells of fish skin and internal organs. After penetrating the host cell, the virus replicates in the cytoplasm and starts to cause structural changes, called the cytopathic effect, which occurs about 30 days after infection. The behavior of infected fish does not change, they continue to lead an active life, eat and do not separate themselves from the group.Virus-infected cells increase in size from a few thousand to even a hundred thousand times, reaching up to 2 mm in diameter. In the first stages, when only individual super-sized (hypertrophied) cells are visible on the body, Lymphocystis can be confused with diseases such as 'Ich' (an infectious disease caused by the pathogenic ciliate Ichthyophthirius multifiliis). In general though, these giant cells form clusters resembling bunches of grapes or raspberries. The virus can attack any area of the body, but most often is localized at the fin tips and the mouth, the areas most susceptible to injury. Minor inflammatory reactions may be observed around these clusters. If you take a scraping from the affected area of the fish, you can microscopically see round shaped hypertrophied cells, covered in a dense and smooth hyaline membrane.Over time, the affected cells burst and the cytoplasm containing the virus enters the water, creating the risk of infecting other fish. Mass fish mortality from Lymphocystis is not observed, but affected fish can look unsightly. In extreme cases, hypertrophied tissue can block the mouth, and the fish will lose the ability to feed.
